The African Grey Parrots are considered very intelligent with the ability to be excellent talkers. These parrots are also very insecure and highly sensitive; they need constant reassuring that things are as they should be around them. Even with these issues the Grey’s like to be in control and are very observant to their surroundings.

It is important for a new owner to establish themselves as the leader of the flock when they first get the bird. With this accomplished, the Grey will be a gentle pet, with the ability to mimic what is spoken around them. One thing to remember is they need constant attention, without it they have been known to pluck their own feather out.

The diet of the African Grey is very important to the longevity of the parrot’s life.

If you only feed your parrot a diet of seeds and nothing else, you can expect your pet to live only about 15 years. If you give you parrot a more nutritional and varied diet, including fresh fruit and vegetables, you can expect them to live to be about 70.

Check with your vet to get an appropriate diet plan for your parrot.

Grey’s are also known to be clumsy birds, due to wings being clips too short, or the baby greys never being taught to fly. For this reason, experts suggest using soft cloths such as towels on the bottom of the cage instead of just the metal grate. Then cover the soft material with newspaper to avoid injury if the bird falls.
